The Final Chord of a Genius: Farewell to Kazuhito Yamashita

Jan 27, 2026

With heavy hearts, we at Ramírez Guitars join the worldwide mourning for the passing of one of the most extraordinary performers to have played our guitars: Japanese maestro Kazuhito Yamashita (1961–2026).

Kazuhito was a visionary who transformed expectations of the instrument on a global level. Born in Nagasaki, his musical journey began at the age of eight under the tutelage of his father, Toru Yamashita. His rise was meteoric, becoming the youngest winner of the most prestigious international competitions, but his true impact lay in his ability to expand the limits of what was possible.

In 1999, he received the Grand Prize at the National Arts Festival of the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs. He has also collaborated with artists of the stature of James Galway, the Tokyo String Quartet, Leonard Slatkin and jazz guitarist Larry Coryell

A Legacy of Audacity and Technical Mastery

Yamashita will be remembered forever for his exceptional technique and daring transcriptions. His historic 1980 recording of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was a milestone for classical guitar. His mastery allowed him to tackle complex works by composers such as J.S. Bach, reimagining them with an emotional depth and technical brilliance that captivated audiences on every continent.

For us, Kazuhito was more than a virtuoso; he was part of our musical family. The maestro entrusted his art to our Ramírez Tradicional 1ª guitar, an instrument that, in his hands, achieved that perfect symbiosis between the classical and the innovative spirit that characterised him. Seeing and hearing our Tradicional vibrate with the energy of his transcriptions has been, and always will be, one of the greatest sources of pride for our company.

Beyond the Stage

His influence transcended concert halls. He was a passionate educator who shared his wisdom through masterclasses and workshops, always focusing on precision, emotional expression and innovation. Despite his legendary status, Yamashita always remained humble and deeply committed to excellence

At Ramírez Guitars, we deeply feel this loss. We would like to express our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the entire guitar community. Kazuhito’s passing marks the end of an era, but his pioneering spirit will live on in every note of his recordings.

Rest in peace, maestro. Your music will continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that your art is eternal.
