The visit of the master Pedro Chamorro to our workshop is always enriching, this type of relationship is what helps us both to grow and achieve better results. It is teamwork. Recently, Chamorro, renowned concert plectrum player, composer and teacher, visited us to try out the first bandurria made by José Enrique Ramírez (José Ramírez V). During his visit, the maestro shared valuable recommendations on the choice of strings, contributing his experience to achieve an optimal sound.
Maestro Chamorro’s recommendation
Pedro Chamorro analysed in detail the sonority of the bandurria and recommended this string combination which considerably improved the sonority of the instrument. This set of strings was specially selected to achieve an ideal balance between power and clarity.
The ideal mix of strings
The maestro suggested the following string combination, which has been tested and validated in our workshop:
- 1st string: Elixir smooth steel with anti-rust protection, gauge 0.12 or 0.11. This string provides a bright and crisp tone in the high notes.
- 2nd and 3rd strings: Thomastik flatwound, known for their smooth and durable response, which facilitates precise playing.
- 4th string: Royal Classics silver-plated roundwound, featuring internal nylon strands for a round, balanced tone.
- 5th and 6th strings: Hannabach nylon strings with silver-plated winding, which provide a warm and powerful sound on the lower strings.
This string mix is designed for handmade bandurrias with an approximate 276 mm of tension. The combination achieves a sound that brings out both the power of the bass and the clarity of the treble, giving the instrument an unparalleled expressiveness.
